Digging Location: Nokia N97 Review at GSM ARENA

nokia-n97 When I launched my Google Chrome and browse to the www.gsmarena.com I stumbled to an interesting gadget identified as Nokia N97. Before this, I just read the review of the newest Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 then I can’t help thinking that Nokia N97 is build to challenge the XPERIA. Is it? Well let’s find out shall we?

Nokia is the most improved mobile phone company in the world. Nokia is market leader, which make him dominant in this business. In order to maintain the leader status Nokia keep improving its production quality through innovations and improvements. N97 is Nokia way of proofing to the market that the innovation has take place. But the competitors has arrived four months earlier than N97 (Please note XPERIA already hit the market now and N97 will be launch around 2 quarter of 2009), what can this gadget do to regain the market of the high end mobile phone?

Nokia N97 Apperiance

The full QWERTY keyboard and the 3.5’’ touch screen indicate this mobile phone designed to compete with the smart phone and PDA class, an indication that N97 will be XPERIA's hardest competitor to beat. The keyboard slides through the body of the mobile phone just like XPERIA X1. However, it is the size of this gadget, which attracts my attention most. To make the large size touch screen fit the body of the phone Nokia make a large dimension for a mobile phone. The dimension of the phone is 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9-18.3 mm. What a giant mobile phone it is. Well they can't help it. The 3.5’’ display is the biggest among other competitors. Wait until you discover the weight of this mobile phone. This baby is so heavy yes; it weighs about 150 grams, and it will make it a big, heavy thing to stick in your pocket.

The touch screen offers more than it was expected, the 16 million colors and 360 x 640 pixels resolution. This specification is the highest among the competitors. Big screen with big resolution and superb color display quality, this baby is every gadget freaks dream.

For the sound enthusiast Nokia N97 provide the stereo headset through its 3.5 mm jack, make it easy for the users to select from various headset product in the market for the best sound quality. In addition, Nokia gives you more with the A2DP Bluetooth technology. For you who like to listen to the music via your mobile phone, as always, the N series provide you with the best tool to use. To store applications, peripherals, documents and music Nokia N97 is equipped with microSD (TransFlash), up to 16GB and 32 GB internal memory. I don’t know if this is true but if it is the truth then it will be the biggest among other N-series.

The N-series always put extra attention on its camera performances; the Nokia N97 is not an exception. The camera used is superb, it uses 5 MP, 2584x1938 pixels, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, video(VGA@30fps), flash; and secondary video call camera. You can always count on this gadget to make high quality images and video recording. Well we still have to wait to see it ourselves.

Under the Hood

Enough about the outside let’s take our next step and walk into the deep inside of Nokia N97. The touch screen user interface used by Nokia N97 requires a new Operating System. Rumor has it that this gadget will use the same kind Operating System as Nokia 5800, which is the new Symbian S60 5th edition. The new Operating System will make some disadvantages for Nokia N97 because the third party application suitable for this OS is still rare. Nevertheless, that is not a big problem, I’m sure Nokia will increase the amount and type of the application for the new OS. Nokia will use their programmers’ network to develop applications for Nokia N97.

The phone operates on GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 for the 2G network and HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100 for the 3G network. For the 3G network, N97 uses HSDPA 3.6Mbps and wireless LAN technology with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, UPnP technology to browse the internet and send data.

The facility is a mainly standard N-series mobile phone. However, the most interesting part is the usage of the new Nokia Maps 2.0 touch due to the implementation of the touch screen.

To provide power for N97, Nokia use the big Li-Ion 1500 mAh (BL-4L) battery, which gives up to 430 hours stand by time and up to 6 hours and 40 minutes talk time give and take depends on the condition. How much you need to spend for this gadget. Well the answer has to wait until the release of this gadget, but I think this gadget will be very expensive.
